Achieving Goals

One of my 2015 goals is to hike more as a family.  The kids and I have been walking to the mail box in preparation of this and with the sun high in the sky it was time to start.  Last week we had our first family hike.  For work Josh has to hike a 2 1/2 mile secure loop once a month.  In order to see Josh more, enjoy the sun and start our 2015 hiking we joined him on the job last Friday.
I was very pleased to say it was a huge success.  No, not up a mountain but that loop certainly had its ups and downs and the kids handled it great.  Abigail walked the whole way, Ethan 2/3rds and Naomi, well that girl LOVES the kelty pack.  It was so fun to be out, enjoy each other, and start our hiking season off with a good start.

Noisy Days

This house is a noisy house for sure.
Around here drum playing starts early!  Everyone must do their part in filling the house with noise and Naomi is not one to be left out at all!

Sweet Tooth

Oh, that look of surprise when you see that mama made daddy a pie.
Yes, this girls has a nose and an eye for any and all sweets.  How it does make me laugh.

Today we celebrate with my dear sister 5,000 miles away.
Happy Birthday Hillary.  We love you so and wish we could be with you to give you a birthday hug today!

The Start Of The Friday Garden Updates

Outside the snow is slowly melting away.  The puddles are filling.  The crisp morning air warms each day.  Promise of spring and the end of winter has arrived to these northern lands.
And inside we continue our daily encouragement of grow baby grow.
Cucumbers, tomatoes, broccoli, zucchini, romenesco, brussel sprouts, leeks, pumpkins and cheddar cauliflower are growing.  Oh how tiny those little seeds are.  Maybe 52 broccoli plants are a few too many but when we are so excited to see something grow maybe I get just a little bit carried away.

2 am

Naomi is not the best night time sleeper.  She never has been.  I know someday she will sleep through the night but for now she doesn't.  Out of this I can take the only positive.
The chance to get woken to beautiful northern lights.  These great displays of dancing lights that I might have slept through. Thank you my little lady for this one blessing from this year of wakeful nights.  It is one I will remember.

What Caused The Quiet

Josh has been working a lot these past few weeks.  Field season is upon us and there is work for him to do.  The kids and I are busy, filling our days and time without daddy around.  I am getting used to doing the juggle solo.  But on Saturday Josh had the chance to be home with us.  Dinner time arrived and I found myself cooking dinner alone.  It gave me pause for a minute.  The lack of little hands reaching for the items on the counter, no little person walking my steps holding on to my legs as I move and the quiet as I chopped, stirred and prepared.  I looked around and smiled.
A little boy sitting with his daddy, watching and learning from this man he loves so much and has missed so very much these past few weeks.
And these sisters, playing quietly as they sort through this doll's diaper bag and move things from here to there.  This family of mine, those I love so much, finding contentment as they wait.  Play, talk, learning, and discovering as they trust me to put food on the table to fill them all.  In the days since dinner time has gone back to the pure chaos that single parenting at dinner time brings but this day, it makes me smile.  Something to remember for sure.

Come To Me

Our little lady is on the move these days.
Crawling is fast
and gets her almost everywhere she wants.
But it is standing and walking that she truly loves.  Last week she took her first tentative step.  It has started.  She is moving forward and so very excited about it!

Spring Time Blues

Not everyone in this house is super excited about spring.
This boy cried when daddy covered up the snowmachine and asks everyday to go sledding.  Oh my little boy, you are too small to remember the joys of summer.  They will be there before we know it.  The time of sledding will come once again, lets enjoy the sunshine first.

A Mentor

Learning new things can be hard.  But throughout our lives if we can find a mentor to help us through those new experiences, they are a little more manageable.  One of the many advantages of having older siblings is that they get to be some of those great life mentors.
You might just be seeing a lot of things that have to do with Naomi walking these days because well, she is.  One baby step here and there.  It has begun.

My Growing Bag Lady

I was at a meeting on Saturday regarding parenting/education and such.  One thing that has stuck with me was something a friend said.  Looking back at her four grown children, all pursuing very different things in life, she remarked that what they are doing now is just bigger expansions of what they all loved when they were in first and second grade.
And then I thought of this picture.  My little bag lady.  This girl loves to pack a bag, or five, a cart, stroller, purse and lunch box all at once and then move them around the house.  It is amazing how fast she can empty a toy box or her special place.  Now when she has to put things back - that takes forever, but the "always room for a little more" saying is one of her favorite thoughts.
Takes me back to this picture of my miss Abigail when she was just two.  A budding bag/grocery cart lady.  With age has come strength and with strength has come the ability to carry more bags.  Now the question this leads to - what life skill does this show me and what profession would benefit from these exceptional skills?  Only time will tell.

The Case Of Being The Third

If you have been around this blog for awhile you might remember this post from 3 1/2 years ago.  But then the time goes on, children are added to the family and well as it often happens - priorities change.
The other day I saw Naomi touching the fire extinguisher and I thought, good she is safe and happy for the moment.  Josh came home and said, "WHAT IS GOING ON, Naomi is touching the fire extinguisher."  I replied, "I know, isn't it great that it kept her happy for 5 minutes today."  He didn't quite agree and my sister might use this post to confirm that Naomi is going to be my spoiled child.  But really, when you put the same situation times three and things look a little differently to this mama.  Yet another case of third child syndrome.

Adding Color

Last month we showed you the new climbing wall that Josh and his dad built for the kids.  The thing was it was a little bland.
So Josh, with the help of Abigail, took a night and painted the wall purple.  Then the wall sat that way for two weeks.  Josh just wasn't sure where to go from there.  Then we through of the dr. suess look and he took it from there.
The kids love it, and they love to climb.
Both Ethan and Abigail are able, and love, to climb all the way to the top solo now.  Abigail can also go side to side (or bouldering as it is called in climbing wall lingo) and down.  But if you ask what her favorite thing to do it would be climb up and then jump down.  My job, making sure Naomi and Ethan aren't under her at the time.  Oh boy - hope these kids realize how many gray hairs this climbing wall gives me.  So happy it brings a way to stretch, grow and learn.

Cold Chill To Recovery

Over this weekend our house saw some pretty high fevers and lots of popsicles being eaten while wrapped up in blankets to keep the chills at bay.
Happy to say we are on the up swing.  Although we are going to continue our housebound weekend a few more days into the week.  Fevers, sore throats and weepyness begone.

April 10, 2015

I love the times of play at our house.  The times when the baby and I are getting chores, cooking and such done and Abigail and Ethan are content in their imaginative worlds.
Ahh play, you just never know what will come of that time.

The Smell Of Fresh

We might have had snow over the weekend but that doesn't mean that spring isn't on its way.
Welcome back to the deck days and the smell of fresh laundry hanging on the line.  Oh how I love the outdoors.

When Worry Wasn't Necessary

When Ethan was small I worried so much that he wouldn't be a reader.  He NEVER ever wanted to sit and read a book.  I remembered Abigail sitting much better at a smaller age and I worried about Ethan.  I learned that I didn't want to force sitting for a book but then you read all the studies about reading to your child and it made me worry yet again.
Well, I am happy to say that those worries were in vain.  This little boy loves to read and can be found with a stack of books often.  The sight is one I never get tired of at all.

The Sugar High

Easter is a full day and thus really has to have two blog posts.  After church and nap time is was finally the "kids" time.
Easter baskets were ready and on the table when the naps ended and oh how excited the kids were.  Ethan got a bike horn and Abigail got a bike bell.  Ethan could not stop laughing at the sound his horn made.  They also both got a box of bandaids.  The next day Abigail had 8 hello kitty pictures all over her body.  Oh a box of bandaids to do anything she wanted with, the perfect gift.  When she gave me one yesterday she requested that I call her nurse nancy (in reference to one of her favorite books).  Unfortunately she is also learning the pain of removing 8 bandaids but it is all a learning process.
And then their easter baskets each included a few peeps and a chocolate bunny.  The bunny we saved for the next day but they kids were amazed when I say yes to their requests to eat ALL three of their peeps.  Candy and a green light to eat more then one.  A dream come true.
After the baskets the kids needed to run off their sugar rush so we headed outside for an egg hunt.
If you have been to our blog before you know we are old pros at egg hunts.  They are such a great outdoor activity we did hunts about 20 times last year.  The kids were super excited that this time some of the eggs actually included a jelly bean.  (Josh and I think the hunt should be the fun part, not sure if they kids agree but it was fun to see their faces when they found out the eggs held a treat).
Yes, sugar rushes and outdoor fun on an Easter afternoon before a simple spaghetti dinner.  That is the way this family rolled and it was good.

Easter 2015

Easter 2015-
Started at sunrise with friends.  Rejoicing together helped us stay warm at 14 degrees.
Then breakfast and dressing up in our new easter finest to celebrate with our Fairbanks Family.

Jesus Is Risen
A Wonderful Day Indeed.

April 3, 2015

Two weeks ago something very sad happened.  Someone in my family broke my camera.  My wonderful, used so much of every day, special, I waited so very long for camera.  Josh knows how important it is to me so a new one is on the way.
But because of its absence I have not been able to take pictures every day.  SO HARD on this mama.
But I can tell you, even if I can't show you.  That we have been having a week of Easter.  Preparing for the day we celebrate Christ's resurrection is a big deal in this house.
And with the celebration of new life comes the bunnies, chicks and eggs.  Coloring eggs, making cookies, going on egg hunts, and LOTS of jelly beans have filled our week.
Yes, Christ is Risen indeed.

(Thanks to the egg extravaganza photo booth for these pictures.  The new camera is on its way!)

10 Months

My sister has been referring to Naomi as a one year old for the past few weeks.  It freaks me out.  I quickly state, no she is just 9 months old.  Don't rush this.  But time does rush on and today we have reached 10 months old.  Still two very long months away from being one but time does go fast.
Naomi has reached the age where she likes to consume her food through her nose, ears, eyes and skin.  No meal is complete until all food has been rubbed, massaged, and filled every pore of her face and hair.  Since I know some people really don't like messy food covered baby pictures I thought I would add this one instead.  A nightly bath has become a ritual for our little lady.  Kids in Fairbanks, Alaska don't get baths very often, especially in the winter, due to the extreme dryness of the air.  So hard to keep those little bodies moisturized.  But our baby dear has proven to us that spot cleaning these days is not an option.  She smiles she laughs and when she hears the bath water running she comes crawling as fast as she can.  You know, maybe she does her nightly food covering just to get her bath.  I wouldn't put it past this smart little 10 month old.  When it comes to things she wants she always finds a way.

A Sad Farewell

Carly, our pet butterfly, is getting old so I asked if we could let her go today. Abigail was very strongly against this. It really was a nice day and Abigail thought if we showed Carly the sunshine she would be happier living with us for a few more days.  I did warn Abigail against Carly flying away but Abigail still took the butterfly out to the deck. Abigail loves to carry Carly around on her finger.  Surprisingly the butterfly stayed on Abigail's finger several minutes outside on the deck but as Abigail was bringing her back, in she flew away. Abigail cried for two hours. I was able to help her calmed down a little by encouraging her to write Carly a note to put outside for when she comes back to visit.
This letter was written with tears running down Abigail's face the entire time.  For a first pet, this butterfly was one very loved butterfly.

Let Me Tell You A Story

Years ago my mother bought the kids a bear that reads them The Night Before Christmas.   It is a favorite every year to everyone, but Josh....
